I picked up this nice looking lapiz/sterling bracelet for $4 today. The latch looks like a "victorian box latch" set with an amethyst. It came with matching sterling/lapiz/amethyst earrings that I didn't purchase (yet, but I might go back). Could anyone help with dating such a piece? Thank you!

Hi! I've taken the liberty of reposting your photograph as Full Image so it's easier for everyone to see. (You'll want to remember to do that in the future.) As to your bracelet... From the findings, it looks to be of quite recent manufacture. Any markings? If so, in focus, close-up photographs would be helpful. And, since the earrings aren't (yet) in your possession, perhaps you could describe them? Especially the manner in which they affix to the ear.

    Hey deborah,

Thank you for the response. Unfortunately the upload limit of 1mb prevents me from posting super clear photos.

On the back of the clasp you can just make out the "92" of "925". The rest is worn off. The earrings were stamped 925 as well on the hooks. They were fish hook style like the attached snip from google.

Also of note is that it is strung on some old dirty string. Are clasps like this still manufactured in sterling as of late? My research led me to believe it was an indicator of an older piece.

The clasp appears to be recent. Similar are readily available.

Well I am a guy who is not interested in wearing or reselling, only in learning :). The earrings were $5 more.

Hey Deborah those seem very different and more modern to me. I hope I don't come off as abrasive because I'm really trying to learn. Do you maybe have a better example of an old antique "box clasp" so I could compare and have a better understanding?

Here's one last photo of mine.

Definitely a new bracelet, but if it was only five bucks it would be hard to say no.

    How about gifting ??
That set would make a wonderful gift ...for a whole nine dollars !
Oh, & if you just want to learn.....always buy the ' set ' when presented to you !!
    Why , you ask ?
Because it was sold that way , and can help identify it's origin ....

Absolutely recent, probably from Asia (non-traditional). Very nice, and a real bargain.

Are you sure the beads are lapis lazuli? I cannot see any traces of pyrite and the color is too dark/greyish blue.

Can you post a photo of the broken bead? Need to see how it broke.

Unless it's due to the photo, it doesn't look like Lapis to me? It lacks the metallic elements and the vibrancy/depth of colour associated with Lapis. I may stand corrected, but???

Agreed, to some extent, but the vibrancy of the "blue" is the most important factor, coupled with where it was mined from. Afghanistan, perhaps is arguably the most desirable. Though I think I'm correct in saying, it is also mined in USA and in Canada?
