James Garfield book- Pullout letter (anyone ever see this before)

    Picked up this James A Garfield book today (from1881) and it has a hand written note insert from Garfield to his mother. First time I’ve seen a book from that era with a copy of a note. How did they do that back then? Any thoughts?
