Can we see a pic of the bottom and inside ? I get a Chinese feeling. They are cute though.

It’s difficult to see. Is the bottom of the animal rounded? If so, maybe for mashing something.

There are FIVE of them? How odd... How big are they?

Is the "dog" portion like a pestle or a muddler of some sort?

2” tall. My husband and I assumed they were used for mashing, but the bottom of the stick does not touch the bottom of the bowl.

Japanese things often come in sets of five.

    Maybe redemptive:

Is the end on the left of the photo flat or hollow?

Question is whether they are a set or NOS. Where were they acquired? Maybe for grinding spices?

They are 1 1/2 inches. Neither end of the stick fit in the bottom of the container, they are too large. My mother in law had these wrapped up with a box of crystal and hob nob candle votives. She bought it all together.

Are they stoppers? Sake bottles, something that way?
    Edit: no, more idiocy.

Not sure about the "cups", but maybe the others are chopstick rests?
