Japanese Ink Block Print?

Am interested in knowing anything anyone knows about this print; there are 2 photos posted on the Art media page. It's one of four; possibly by the same artist. Purchased at an antiques shop in Denver, Colorado. I see the words "Toya Kuni," but can find nothing about these words. If they are the artist's name, I can find nothing about them, either.

Many thanks, in advance, Kathy

PS: Did I correctly ask about this and correctly post the photos?

Your photos are not embedded in this post. They were posted to the Media Gallery. You can use the little camera icon in the Reply toolbar to find and embed those pictures here.

I saw one of the pictures pop up in my New Messages feed. That looked like a wood block print all right. Samurai and a lady, but how old, reprint or really old, etc... no idea.

I’ve added your photos here. You can use Bakers tips to embed them in the future.

Hey - I Need - do you know how to do a Google Image Search? I think we should try to find this image elsewhere on the web. I cannot find an artist in this genre with the name written on the back.

Maybe it is in the style of, honorary?

An interesting find. I am not familiar with any "in the style of" wood blocks, but this sure is similar.

I haven't found this particular print (woodblock, btw, rather than ink block), but there are similar prints that are identified as Kabuki actors (as in the link from inh)

Here's one from Kunisada Toyokuni III:

Another issue is that woodblock prints were and are produced from the original blocks for decades after the artist is gone.

You might ask on this site:

Ah Toyokuni, all one word? Not the same dates written on the back.

There was more than one. And this might be by someone else.

I don't. Can you please share?
Thank you

Sorry, can't share what I don't know. "i need help" was able to find something similar - see above.

I generally don’t use image search, for lack of skills, I found this otherwise,

I have a tough time accepting that you have a lack of skills!

This seems to be the cartouche that led to the Toyokuni attribution:

You can read here:

If it seems confusing, that's because it is.

Would love to find someone who can translate these characters on the print.

Many thanks for the refresher.

Fabylous; many thanks for this resource!

Yes! I just learned from a Dec 8, 2020 post that this print was done by Kunisada who signed his name as Toyokuni III! Thanks, all. Will post the information on the other prints as soon as I see if any are different.

Hats off to all!

You can search by uploading the image for any ukiyo-e (Japanese woodblock print) here:

I took the liberty of uploading yours and this is the result:

The artist identified as Utagawa Kunisada.
