I did not ask for the condition report, I never did ask with any other auctions, but all the others had raised to my expectations.

Any ideea of the origins of this ring, does letters MP or NO say something?
    Thank you

I don't recognise them as anything specific, sorry. Pairs of letters are most commonly makers marks in the UK. Here is an overview of French gold marks:

That said not all pieces were marked, and marks can also wear away over time.

Simona, be careful though if you test the metal and damage it you may not be able to return it to the Auction house.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

I LOVE the ‘strapping’ on the side of the ring as well, but isn’t that a different color gold??? Maybe indicating 2 different Carat golds?? Just curious.....

And IMHO, they certainly weren’t ‘forthcoming’ in the markings on the inside of the back of the ring, what with that darkish, out-of-focus towards the back of the ring, image!!!

The 9ct red just has more copper alloy than the 9ct yellow.

Most of what I can say has already been said. It looks heavily worn but not nearly so old as Georgian, more trying for Renaissance revival. As has been noted, a man's signet ring, unengraved, probably pinky at size M.

The marks are not at all like the tiny, largely pictorial marks used by the French. Was any representation made about the fineness of the gold, what karat it is?

The stone is what is called 'nicolo'. The blue is an illusion created by the black showing through a thin layer of white. I too was struck by the condition of the stone compared with the condition of the shank. I can't spot any signs in the surrounding metal of one stone being prised out & another fixed in. Maybe the original cracked. If this was a pinky ring, the stone would have taken a beating.

Simona, when buying for investment purposes you really need to know exactly what you're getting. As AJ said, auctioneers mostly rely on whatever the consignor tells them about an item, they do not test metal or do research, unless you pay them to do it, not worth it if the item is not going to sell for thousands of dollars.

I'm not sure citing the opinions expressed in this thread is going to be adequate to make a case with the auction house that the item is not Georgian. It becomes we said/they said. "Probably French" doesn't count for anything, you can't hold them to that. If it's not actually a size M, you would have measurable evidence of misrepresentation.

It looks to me as if it is GF, probably over brass. Because of the wear on the ring I would expect the stone to be at least hazy. It is banded agate cut parallel to the layering. The shoulder straps look to be rose gold and the front look to be yellow gold. This leads me to question if the shank and stone were not replaced at some time. Definitely not Georgian. I would get it tested and see about getting my money back. As is value; possibly 25 pounds?

    Hi all,
    @Ownedbybear @Any Jewelry @komokwa
Thank you all for your valuable advise and for shearing your expertise.
I have contacted the auction house and explained the situation, the words I used were that the ring was " incorrectly catalogued as Georgian" , and guess what, they agreed to issue a refund.
I have sent the ring, they received it yesterday. Hooray!!!
I decided not to go further to spend more money to find out if it's gold and how many carats as I wanted to return it, so no updates on this I am afraid.
This was a lesson for me, and a very good one. I will ask here first going forward , the member in this forum are so amazing. I am so grateful for your help.
    Thank you all again.
    Kind regards,
    Simona
