    It's the name of the hobbyist who painted the blank porcelain.

    In this case, J. Schumacher is most likely a hobbyist china painter who did the decoration. Painting on the blank white body was a very popular hobby in the states in the late 1800's and well into the 20th century, practiced by both women and men.

    The manufacturer of the blank isn't really important here.

    It's very nice!

    I agree, It is very nice of work Bakersgma. too bad there not a whole set in this pattern. Thanks janetpjohn and Bakersgma for sharing your insight on this hobby of a bygone era. They proudly marked there signature on it, so there could be no mistake as to who did this lovely work
