Putting this in the art category - some may disagree :)

Box is 12x12 inches, and 4 1/2 inches high. The image is 6x6 inches. The inside is covered with felt, even the hinges. The hinges look pretty old to me patina wise but I guess they could be older hinges used on a newer box. The box itself seems to be paint over some type of white base(gesso perhaps) over wood. The image is 3 dimensional, painted over top of sculpted ceramic... Very modern art-y. Sort of reminds me of the Days of Future Passed Moody Blues album cover...kinda.

I'm intrigued by this thing - the - maybe just some student's art project...but I like it a lot and think it has at least a number of years age to it.

I don't really know what questions I have about it but ...thoughts on where this may have come from? Artist? Student? Home Goods in Portland?

Thanks for any comments/help as always!

I love it. Very surreal. Im betting thats an art tile someone slapped on that box to "pretty" it up.

The Art in the middle is "interesting".....excepting for the fact that it has two eyes, the lyrics that immediately popped into MY mind were
"It was a one-eyed, one-horned, flyin' purple people eater
(One-eyed, one-horned, flyin' purple people eater)
    A one-eyed, one-horned, flyin' purple people eater
Sure looks strange to me (one eye?)
    " BUT, I still LIKE it!!!! :):):)

EDIT: To me, definitely a "Picasso-esque" style look to it!!:):)
If you loupe in the upper left corner of the "frame" of the image where I circled in red, is what looks like writing, readable????

Sorry......had forgotten to upload!!!!! Here 'tis.....

Good eye - it kind of does look like writing ...but I don't think it is...looked at it with magnifying glass -maybe just a scuff.

For what it is worth, I think this is a VERY creative combination of objects. For some reason, the craze on the outside of the box and the smooth lacquer edging around the sides in Pic 4 and the hinge in Pic 5 almost look asian to me. An old lacquered box repurposed? The hinges don't match this and look replaced, and the tile looks added as well. Even the velvet lining could be redone. So a real combination, but I do love the avant-garde tile - so cool. I see a face AND a flower bowl, but my morning coffee is only just kicking in. ;)

@clutteredcloset49, There was a nicely done ball cap....with the cats all over it!!! Found them!! I just have my principles on what I'll spend on a hat/cap!!! AND there is also a terrific DOGS print (don't think in a hat tho!) of which I just bought a panel of that fabric!! I love BOTH of those prints.....so bright and colorful!!!!!

Sorry, I don't have 3-D rendering in my version of Photoshop (older).....so the hats I choose, have to already have most of the directionality --- I can fudge them around, but other than flip them around or 'liquify' them, I'm somewhat limited!!!:smuggrin::smug::D:):hilarious::D

EDIT: INH, ooooh, you made me think......maybe I could wrap the print around some kind of a hat though......hmmmmmm:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

I've never seen that hat. Has someone made that hat themselves from Laurel Burch Fabric? I don't carry the fabrics.

However, I sell new Laurel Burch purses, socks, umbrellas, mugs in my store. She is a collectible in her own right. Her older jewelry is sought after. I still have two hats from previous years, but not baseball style. Sun hats with just a Laurel Burch sash around the top. As far as I know no one is wholesaling hats, at least I haven't noticed it in any of my wholesale catalogs..

I also didn't see it on the licensed website

@clutteredcloset49, What a talented woman, and what a devastating disease she had......sad.....
I dug around a bit.....here is where the baseball cap is coming from....and it's being called, as my image says "Kaleidoscope Cats" by Calico Cats........
http://calicocaps.com/category/page=16/catId=3296202 one has to seriously wonder if they're legit!!!!! At least she's getting some credit here:

Hmm - interesting. It looks like she makes them herself.
At least if you go to the "About Us" page that is what it says.

The material can be purchased as you know. If she has the correct sales licenses she can buy the bolts of material from the wholesaler to make her products.
She doesn't say she is selling Laurel Burch products. She has labeled them as her own using Laurel Burch fabric which she admits too.
It doesn't look like she is doing anything wrong, but I certainly don't know all the laws in regard to this.

It's a cute hat, but pricey.
