Help identify this mysterious wood-cabinetted couch/sofa.

I've been trying for a few years to identify this couch... with it's wooden cabinets for arms, iron spring\burlap underbelly, and old-school slotted screws. Sure is pretty. Anyone know what the style is, or some information that might lead me to proper identification? The only markings on it are a number 10, written in pencil, somewhat calligraphically. Apologies for a lack of photo re: the latter.

Idle guess would be 1920s. Has a sort of craftsman/deco proportionality to it. The only purpose I can imagine for the cabinets would be storing extra barware.

It looks very wide,so I wonder if its some sort of daybed ? It almost looks like it was a built in,maybe on a boat or the like.great looking piece.

 

Not a built in, sides and back are too nicely finished.

At first I was thinking European, until I saw the oak.
It appears massive in the picture, so has to be a large room. Specially made?

Lawyer's office?
Mansion's library?

This wasn't your everyday person's piece of furniture.

We had something similar here once that was more Empire in style. I want to say maybe Swedish? Think this a bit later and Victorian.

 

On another forum, poster identified it as early 20th century, english. I'd say that's probably correct. It sold for $170.

I'd love to know why they think it's English, I've not seen anything like here.

 

Dunno, I've never seen anything like it USA, on other forum they posted about mid century furniture here & it's similar idea but it's clearly not the same

Indeed. I've seen sofas like your example, and I like them. This one is a puzzle though.

 

Am finding a few examples in searching. Seem to be Swedish or Danish in origin. Here is one with a small enough pic to post. Being called Empire for the most part. I do think yours a bit later.

 

That could very well be, the one posted on other forum was an auction sale that probably came in a container ship so just easier to slap english origin on it.

 

I'm not a big lover of MCM style, but could change my ways for that!
