    The seller titled this as : English Flemish barley twist dining gothic hall chair

    Does anyone know more accurately when this is from. The carving looks lovely from the photos but is it a mark that it’s not so good a quality because the carving is only on the front of the chair?

    Stuck an extra chair I saw at the bottom but is most likely too far for pick up but I was intrigued about it still. Gilt and caned

    What is it with you and hall chairs? ;) The reason it's only carved at the front is because it was designed to sit against a wall in a room (hall), rather than up against a table, where you could see the back of it. 19th C Victorian Gothic as @alors rightly says.

    Your little gilt one was probably made for a bedroom - try boudoir chair. It goes nicely with the dressing table behind it. Looks very nice condition so might be worth a punt if its cheap. Those rattan holes are expensive to repair. Colour looks original.

    Haha :hilarious: I’ve suddenly become interested in them and they keep showing up in my eBay searches nearby.

    The biggest reason is they are ridiculously cheap. People don’t want to deliver so they put them on cheap.
    Hence getting a gillows for £30 delivered right to your door

    You'd be surprised at how many of us started with chairs. I have them hanging from the rafters of the storage shed. Can't seem to part with them and have no place in the house for them.

    The fun has just begun.:smuggrin::smuggrin::smuggrin::smuggrin:

    My basement has 40 or so chairs hanging from the ceiling. No two are alike.

    That hall chair has me hearing Life in the Fast Lane - "everything, all the time". Some of the Victorian furniture is carved and decorated to within an inch of its life.

    This must be a difference between UK and US, but I've never seen anyone in the US post or advertise on CL that they're willing to deliver furniture for free. Why on earth would someone do that? What's a gillows?

    They don’t to be honest. They put for collection only but if they don’t live too far away I always ask if they will deliver.

    They often say yes, once the money is offered I imagine delivering doesn’t look as bad as it once did. I always ask if they will deliver for free before offering money.
