This chair has been in our family for a long time (and is commonly know in said family as “The Chair”) and I am curious as to when it was made. I believe the wood is mahogany and it has carved feet and carvings of snakes/serpents at the top.

The picture is not the best, but am hopeful it will convey sufficient information for identification.

    Hi Amateur Restorer:

Wow, great chair! Like you say, mahogany. I would say it's Empire Revival ca. 1900-10, and was probably part of a multi-piece parlor set that would have included a sofa, another armchair, and several side chairs. Just out of curiosity, are those swans at the top of the back? I know you said they were serpents, but it's hard for me to be sure with only one picture.

Anyway, the buyer in your family back then chose with care and picked out a very nicely carved chair. Unfortunately, chairs are seldom worth what you think they should be. In my part of the U.S. Midwest, I'd expect to see this chair sell at auction for around $200, maybe $300 give or take.

Upon further examination I think you are right, the carvings are of swans.

Thank you for the information you provided.

Think this may be period rater than revival. Revival stuff was not usually this lavish.

Do please come back and post a couple of better photos when you have time. The replies so far suggest that both this and the other chair you asked about are interesting enough to be worth the effort.
