Monogram - Boston Artist from 1877 ... but who?

    Who'd a thunk it? Doll and Richards has a web site and can be contacted "If you have any questions about past exhibitions or have an object you’d like us to authenticate, appraise or sell..." The best place to start.

    It was newspaper articles at newspapers.com I searched for Doll & Richards and limited it to 1878. They were often mentioned in a regular column called "Art Matters" in the Boston Post. Below one of the mentions of Doll & Richards (in the July 8 issue) was a paragraph about what various named Boston artists were currently doing. I scanned through the names to see if any had a name that might match the monogram, and that one did. When I have more time later today, I was going to look for mentions of that artist in 1877 and see if your particular painting subject is mentioned. They often described paintings in that column.

    In 1877-1878 J.M.Stone was painting and showing a number of portraits. I couldn't find a description of your painting, although only a few were mentioned in detail. Here are a couple snippets.

    This group has been so helpful. I really appreciate your taking your the time to solve this puzzle. It looks like I finally know the artist and in such a short time. You are all amazing. I will let you know what I hear from Doll & Richards. A heart felt THANK YOU. Jeff A.
