What are these? Part of?

    My first guess was small ashtrays out of an old car or train but the inside does not come out and there doesn't seem to be any way to empty them. The bottom pieces looks like it would have attached to something - the bases are loose but I can't see any way to separate them from the main part. The pivoting lids are sprung. They are about 1.75" high and the same in diameter.

    It looks like a modified used artillery shell casing.

    These may be for a bridge lamp that had the smoker's set in the center. There probably would have been a third piece too. I recently sold a set from one of my own old lamps, not exactly like these, but reeked of stinky cigarettes! :)

    They are inkwells missing the liners. Probably from a standish or simple brass pen tray.

    Late 19th early 20th I think.
