I picked up this little picture from a charity shop and thought it was a delightful little scene. The characters are so wonderfully depicted with the street seller and the children. The faces are so cleverly drawn.
I’m not great with traditional dress- Turkey? Morocco?
I’ve looked with a loupe and can see no pixels so think pen and watercolour, maybe a tourist souvenir.
It’s been framed without much care with cuts in the card frame and a cheap outer frame.
I’m going to reframe it but would love to hear any thoughts as to age or origin please.
    The picture is 13 x17cm.
    Thankyou for looking :)

It is charming, and sketched with great flair.
The striped kaftan was often seen in Palestine, but the serwin, a khafiya/keffiyeh style cloth worn as a turban, is often seen in Kurdistan.
So my guess would be somewhere in the Ottoman Middle East.

I just checked, if it was sketched in Palestine, it is likely to be pre-1930. Ca 1930 men in the towns began to wear the keffiyeh the Arab way, loose with a cord around the head, and without the Ottoman fez.

    Fascinating!.
OBB suggested Jordan which if my very basic history serves me right is Ottoman Middle East?
Love your knowledge of traditional dress! Thankyou.
Thankyou, I picked it up to flip but I’m liking it rather too much. I’d love to know what those kids are studying. Sweets most likely!

The paper cones on top of the cart remind me of the ones they serve roasted almonds in.

That is very nice. Looks much like the work of the
illustrator Edward Ardizzone, a favorite of mine. Why don't you open it up and see what you find?

Oh, and would you post a photograph of the entire work with frame? Frames can provide an indication as to age.

My first impression was a page out of a children's book.

Yes, it looks more like an illustration. And it may well be.

So does that narrow it down? Sorry I’m so dumb about which countries would use Hebrew. Off to google.
Answered my question, mainly Israel :)

It’s fun isn’t it. I’ve googled and can’t find anything similar other than Edward Ardizzone as Debora mentioned and it’s not one of his. Probably just a talented artist I’ll never track down, I just wish artists and jewellery designers would sign things properly!.
