I dug this door up at the foundation of a farmhouse in Maryland probably ten years ago and hit it behind a workbench for years to keep my father from throwing it in with metal scrap.

On the back are numbers and “New” and “Bristol”. I really like the intricate design on the front. Any ideas on how to clean this up without damaging it?

I thought of painting it black and then the details in bright colors, but I don’t know if they were ever colored...

I looked for reasonably local towns (including Pennsylvania) called New Bristol but nothing. I looked for stove manufacturers called Bristol or New Bristol but still nothing.

    Any ideas? CCF3F813-C26B-4373-9AB2-9791949FE4AD.jpeg 0A4A50B9-D0DB-45D4-AFED-6D36D7861583.jpeg

OH - soak it in 5% vinegar till the rust starts dissolving - Ya can't hurt the cast Iron- wash it off with water after the vinegar bath - that's all I got

Oh that’s easy! I guess I’m assuming it’s cast iron. Little bits of the design have broken off from rust so would that mean it’s probably just steel? Or can rusty cast iron be fragile too?

Hard to hurt cast iron unless it's so far gone that it's thin and has more holes in it than swiss cheese. I usually buy the rustiest cast iron pans I can find at the flea market (because they are cheap - LOL) and bring them back into useful condition.
This is just an example picture (not mine)

Never owned a cast iron pan. Do you need gloves to hold the handle?

My brother started to sandblast it once, but never finished. That’s why half is gray.

Wish the stove experts would show up to help identify it... :(
