Vintage DUNHILL Italian Leather "Bacchus" ? Copper Head Lidded Box...Info,Help??

I found this today & cannot find any others like it..It measures 4" x 3" x 2"...Any Information appreciated...age..purpose...Bacchus???...Thanks anks

 

They made quite a variety of lighters. Possible a box for one of them.

 

Bacchus is god of wine so he's depicted with bunches of grapes. Your figure has horns. One of these

Don't think it's a lighter case. Dunhill lighters come in fitted cases. Here's one, also Morocco leather, as an example.

I was thinking more of their table lighters with odd shapes. Or like this one that had an outer box and then an inner fitted clam shell case.

Your example is of a lighter in a fitted case. The box that holds it is a display box and doesn't appear to be leather. Given the decorative element, the poster's box was meant for display. Morocco leather with moire lining. The type of thing that would be placed on a gentleman's dressing table to hold cufflinks or studs. There was a great interest in Classical imagery-post World War II. I would imagine it dates to then.

Actually, on closer look, I think figure would best be described as a horned grotesque.

I also see a jester. Satyrs, fauns, and sometimes Pan himself are often included in depictions of the 'revel rout' of Bacchus/Dionysus, since their goatish features indicate their lustfulness, making them natural companions & participants in orgiastic rites. The wine god may be capricious, but horns are not one of his usual attributes and I do not see him among the horned deities on the Wiki page. The figure on the Dunhill box I think is meant to evoke the days when a gentleman put the studs in his fancy shirt and went to his club to play cards.
