Maybe someone gave your piece a harsh cleaning - maybe in a dishwasher. As well as washing away the mark, looks like most of the color on the girl has vanished, leaving only stains. Don't know that for a fact, but it's a strong possibility. That can happen if the color is an over glaze treatment.

 

Fantastic research thank you both. Is it possible this piece was sold as a blank hence the lack of a maker's mark? If the paint was washed off, its odd that the brown on the dog held up so well. THe pink on the girl matches the dog's tongue maybe the dog was just very affectionate?

This one is white but most are painted I think. That is one affectionate dog

Evidently not... or it was never present in the first place. If the maker's mark had been under glaze, it would still be present.
