Very interesting and unusual chair. Late Victorian, circa 1890. Hard to say what style it is. Sort of a variation on stick and ball but NOT stick and ball. Not sure I would call it Aesthetic either, as I don't know where it would have borrowed any of the motifs from. Another vote for no paint. Oak and meant to show it. I would not go crazy polishing that brass. Maybe shine up the high areas lightly and let the dark patina stay in the crevices.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

AAAAAAND, another HUGE VOTE for NO PAINT!!!!!!! Maybe a light staining to even the colors out though............?:smug::smug:

Yep, that's it! very nice research by @clutteredcloset49 . I notice they are calling it arts & crafts to go along with a $2500. price tag.
I also notice there is some kind of pigmented finish on cluttered chair, there is a stain, wash or heaven forbid, PAINT! lol. I don't think these rockers were finished clear or "natural" originally.

Love the chair. Can't see a real Aesthetic influence either, but yes to late 19th century.
My vote is for no paint. Possibly light staining.
(Sorry James, no support from me this time.:sorry:)

DRAT! dad walks alone down his path! I can see now how this american fetish got started in stripping old painted furniture in the 1960s! DISGRACEFUL! in my view.
    Oh well, 101 to 1 :(

Here is @clutteredcloset49 "arts & crafts" chair, I would bet that this chair has survived with it's original finish/surface.

I think you are seeing old darkened varnish.

That's possible i guess but it it just looks to "even" to me for an old varnish only. Look at front rail & inside rocker of @clutteredcloset49 chair. Course, it is photos which lie A LOT when old furniture is concerned.
