Need help! Brass mortar and pestle

    I need your help. I am trying to find out the origins, history, value or anything you can tell me about this very heavy, marked, brass mortar and pestle. Thank you in advance!!

    Looks cute, but it doesn't look particularly old. I'd say second half of the 20th century. Too smooth and clean to have any age to it, and looks like it was cut on a machine lathe.

    Agree. Newish if not new. Similar brass mortars and pestles are widely available for sale now. Here's one on offer on amazon.com.

    It could have been made in India, where similar mortar and pestles are still used to grind spices.

    You can find them in Spain too. But I agree the surface decoration of this one points East.

    In the Netherlands we tend to use the stone ones for herbs and spices, probably an Indonesian legacy.

    India is very famous for its brassware. Some of the pieces they produce are absolutely beautiful.

    We see a great deal of Indian brass here, usually Benares/Varanasi made. Legacy of empire and all that.
