Featured Monsterous Black Pot

    This stands about 18" tall, huge. Unmarked. Most likely Mexican. But who made it?

    Judy 3rd pic is the bottom. It has a rounded base.

    Rubbing black pottery is never a bad idea. Sometimes they're faked and a gentle rub will identify if genuine or not. (Or not means that blacking will come off on the hands.)

    The rounded base and high polish made me think of the pottery from Mata Ortiz, Mexico. But the transitions around the neck are not typical of their style - too abrupt and "mechanical". This is an example of work from the Mata Ortiz potters that show what I mean:

    But, it does seem to be consistent with modern work coming out of San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca, Mexico:

    Deb, no color comes off.
    Thanks 2many. I googled Oaxaca and similar pots have come up.

    Yes, that is why I thought Oaxaca, I couldn't recall the specific part.
    There is a different sheen, Oaxaca is softer, Mata Ortiz black is more intense and glossy.
