Poster comments: This article has no photos unfortunately. Are metal parts in old lamps really attached to each other with “plaster” as this author states, or did she mean “solder?”

It's easy to confuse antique styled oil lamps with genuine antique oil lamps. There are several things to keep an eye out, such as specific style for each century, and if fixtures are glued on, or attached to each other with plaster.

    Hi,
Most oil lamps were plastered together. In fact most items that were attached such as silver collars and glass bodys were plastered. Most of my old salt and peppers ( glass with sterling tops were plastered.

Nice simple article on identification. Entire chapters of books are devoted to the subject. I have probably about 200 lamps (way more than I need of course) Most are pre-1900. The one thing most have in common is the plaster holding the collar to the font.
