    Hello,

I’ve acquired this beautiful piece of art at an estate sale but cannot seem to decipher the signature. This came from a well known collector with a large amount of original 19th century art from listed artists around the world. Therefore I firmly believe the work is of a listed artist and would appreciate any help possible determining who it was painted by.

My appreciation in advance for any feedback!

    Thanks!

Maybe you can add a photo of the back of frame as well. That can help to determine age.

May or may not help with the ID, helpful to know the approximate measurements.

Ditto on the recommendation for a photo of the back.

The actual canvas size is 16x20, with 20x24 including the frame. I’ve also posted a photo of the backside of the painting. Looking forward to hearing back with some suggestions on who it might be, so I can at least have somewhere to begin.

Charles Roberson & Co. is a well respected London artist's supply shop and has been in business since 1810. The label appears to have the 99 Long Acre address which is where the company was located from the mid-1800s until 1937. Bedford Gardens is in Kensington. Even without knowing the painter, IMO you did well with your acquisition.

Jivvy the research is my favorite

I would look at Jacob/Jakob Edwin Bachmann. The signature on the following page is not an exact match, but I think the artist merits further investigation.

    https://www.bildfundgrube.net/künstlerseiten-neuheiten/bachmann-e-p/

EDIT: hmmm... now I'm finding another artist's name (Edwin Karl Bachmann) being attached to the exact same signature as above, not sure who's who.

EDIT: Well, this is just a mare's nest. There's another artist, Edwin Paul Bachmann, also with the same signature. Since none of these signatures match what's left of yours, maybe just best to leave this alone. :hungover:

Thanks! I’m definitely going to look into this one, it seems to match up with the letters and whatnot... unfortunately a quick search hasn’t revealed much on this artist... so I’ll need to dig a little deeper to find out more on him.

You don’t by chance know of a good site, that isn’t an arm & a leg worth of subscription fees, do you?

I love www.findartinfo.com but it’s subscription cost is crazy for semi amateurs like myself!

I've been trying to make this read "Edwin Boddington". His signature seems to have varied a great deal, and this would be fairly typical of his subject matter.

It’s worth looking into. I snapped this screenshot from a site called artsignatureditectory (don’t know anything about them), but then I couldn’t enter again without subscribing. EE056BDB-C07D-4F1C-AFAA-822680BEA39F.jpeg
