I believe his name was Rudolf Siegmund.

"Rudolf Siegmund. Geb. 1881 in Bürgel bei Jena. (1881 -1973) Schüler von Ludwig Hofmann. Ab 1914 Lehrer an der Akademie Kassel. Um 1923 in Kassel, um1915 und 1935 in Speele (Fulda) ansässig. Öffentliche Aufträge u. a. für Uschlag (heute Kirche Benterode), München/Weser (Rathaus) und Opladen (Naturwissenschaftl. Gymnasium). Landschafts-, Porträt- und Figurenmaler, christliche Motive. Im Nachlass Illies befindet sich neben einem Konvolut an Druckgrafik und Handzeichnungen umfangreiche Korrespondenz"

I do see him listed as Rudolph Siegmund. However, the way this is signed with a comma on the back of the painting I referenced would indicate otherwise. Correct?

 

It looks like a separate comma, but I think it is part of the S, just like the stroke at the top of the S.
The name Speele has the same S, but since there is no word before it, the stroke doesn't look like a comma.

My grandfather used to write like that.

 

Just imagine this S written as script:

 

Member of The Weimar Five. Studied under Ludwig von Hoffman. Rudolf Siegmund according to available scholarship (of which there isn't much.)

Der Malers Prof. Rudolf Siegmund (* 16.04.1881 in Bürgel bei Jena + 17.11.1973 in Idstein-Oberrod) war ein Schüler von Ludwig von Hofmann an der Weimarer Kunstschule. Ab dem Jahr 1914 war er Kunstlehrer an der Kunstakademie Kassel.

Um 1935 wurde er in Speele an der Fulda ansässig, heute ein Ortsteil von Staufenberg.

Zu seinen Werken gehören besonders Bilder aus dem dörflichen Leben, so die Gemälde "Winterabend im Dorf" oder "Sommerliche Erntelandschaft" aus dem Jahr 1935.

In mehreren Dorfkirchen der heutigen Gemeinde Staufenberg sind Werke von ihm vorhanden, so in der Benteröder Kirche oder der Friedenskirche in Speele (Gethsemane und Gefangennahme Jesu). Von ihm stammen auch die Emporengemälde in der Johanniskirche in Uschlag."
