DSC04439.JPG DSC04441.JPG DSC04442.JPG DSC04444.JPG DSC04446.JPG antique walnut bed adj.jpg This full-size bed belonged to my aunt. She purchased it about 50 years ago in San Francisco at an estate sale. Supposedly, it was already 80 years old when she bought it, so it might have been made around 1890. I believe the wood is walnut. There are no identifying marks on the frame. The pegs on the side boards that fit into the headboard and footboard are wooden. The headboard is 59 in wide and 60 in tall (without the spindles).
Does anyone have any idea about origin and value?

Nice and rather unusual Renaissance Revival walnut bed. ca. 1880. Without a label or stamp it will be virtually impossible to say who manufactured it, as there were literally hundreds of shops across the U.S. at that time. Value will be $200-$300 at auction in my part of the U.S. Midwest, maybe more in San Francisco.

Odd thing. Looks to be modified. To me, the footboad crest should be at the head of the bed. The spindles at the head don't seem to go with it at all. Walnut but likely missing some burl veneer accent panels.

I agree that it looks a bit odd with some mismatch between foot- and headboards, but there's no sign of modification to remove the crest from the head and the little column decorations are the same on both. My experience is with Empire and Biedermeier so I don't have any background on this style.

I think that the headboard and footboard are in their proper places and are a match for each other. The spindles are odd, but by no means impossible, parts of the design. My guess is that this bed frame is the result of a local west coast craftsman's take on the late Renaissance Revival.

Yeah, a bit of Pilgrim century there with those spindles, don't think I have ever seen any on a Victorian-era piece. QUIRKY! which is in keeping with American furniture in general.

Yeah, as Ghopper said, odd. Perhaps this maker was short on machine carving & veneer tools but, he did have a lathe!
"Hey! we gotta put SOMETHING on that headboard!"
    "OK, how about spindles?"
    SOLD!
