Featured Need some info

I recently bought the attached painting from an auction. it has a date of 1854 and an indecipherable signature. I was wondering if anybody could shed any light on the artist?

Are you sure it's a painting and not a print?

 

It was sold as an Edwardian print on canvas. However an auctioneer who has seen it said that there was some cracking which made him think that it was an oil painting. Also there is a faint date in the bottom right hand corner of 1854 which would make it Victorian not Edwardian.

 

I fear you are right, Judy, and it's a print. Suspect an original of this calibre would be beyond the $$ reach of most of us.

Sorry, Steve, I hadn't read yr response, but I wouldn't get yr hopes up. The frame is so new, for one thing, and a glance at the back should reveal a century or more of age, which I doubt it does.

 

Thx. I am not getting my hopes up. I only paid £25 for it so am not too worried what it goes for in auction. The back does look old and the gilt frame isn't new. It looks worse close up than it does in the picture as the frame is cracked in places with a large chunk missing from the corner. I bought it because I liked it but on getting it home it is too large and doesn't really suit our house. Hence I am putting back into an auction. If I get my money back I will be happy!

Can't recall the name of the artist, but eBay usually has at least one copy of the painting. I happen to like the frame as is.

 

Could you show a close up of the sig? So many did horse and hound paintings

 

It's a nice genre painting, and if it's a print at least it's not a cheap one. BTW - did anyone click the link and look at the taxadermied fox in the next image? I think someone turned him into a stick stand!

 

The painting is currently at an auctioneers to be sold on Monday. He still believes its an oil not a print. The signature is indistinct but he thinks it says philipsen. The only reference I have found is a Danish artist but it is not really his style. It looks English school to me
