Welcome, Caroline! Please attach the other 2 pictures from the Gallery to this thread. No one seeing your query here will be able to find those easily and they may be important to an identification.

Pictures can sure be deceiving if not given any information or other pictures to go with.

First thing I saw was the picture, and I'm thinking is this a joke? Why is someone showing the end of the toilet paper roll?

Hello and welcome - keep in mind we tend to get off track and joke around some.

Haha.. so it does!! I’ve added the other pictures. I’m new to all this, so it’s taken me a while to figure out how to upload all the pics together

Hello and welcome Caroline - Just a couple of thoughts. I think the piece was produced fairly recently. Original figurines of this type were usually only painted on the front side. They were made quickly and cheaply and it was thought to be a waste of time and money to decorate a back that was not visible on display. Pieces were usually made in pairs (one female and one male) for display on a mantelpiece. The backs were not visible.

The bright white bottom is also suspicious. That perfectly round center hole would be unusual on an older piece. While the older pieces are hollow, the bottoms usually are not closed at all - they end naturally with a small rim. I'd guess your piece is Japanese sometime in the last quarter of the 20th century. It's a perfectly lovely figurine it's just not old.

Thanks for the reply.. your right, this was once on a mantelpiece with her other half... unfortunately he was laid to rest many years ago. They belonged to my mother in law who was given them 50+yrs ago (so I’ve been told)

The family story may be true. I'm at that age where I keep forgetting that the 1960's were 50 years ago. They may have been new when they were gifted to her. I rounded up one of my figurines to illustrate my points. This figurine dates to the very early 1900's.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

I wonder whether she represented a performer, maybe a dancer? Just something about her ensemble, the type of dress she is wearing and the fan make me wonder.
