Looks like an 80's home project - back when everyone wanted a cutesy, "country kitchen."

Someone made furniture like this at home?

I do know some "rustic" or "shabby" furniture is expertly aged and can be really hard to evaluate. It looks washed out at the bottom, which would indicate it was in a home for a long time and mopped around - but that's the kind of effect they would add.

But those hearts are too crude and the rest of it doesn't look like it was in a home, ever.

Since there's no back, you can see that there's no wear to the front of the shelves.

These are all just visual impressions, @Illielee - only you can evaluate it up close :)

It looks German-influenced to me. Maybe from a part of the US with a lot of Germans?

Yeah, well, maybe not, although it does seem to be built out of southern yellow (hard) pine. Tell you what though, if there is a depression in antique furniture, and there is, that is NOT the case with good examples of antique Southern furniture. I am ALWAYS on the look-out for southern pieces & whenever i see something i like, someone else likes/wants it more, A LOT more! Good & up quality examples of southern furniture is HOT! in the market place, trust me.

The world record for a single piece of southern painted furniture is a Johannes Spitler (german/swiss immigrant) circa 1774 yellow pine painted hanging wall cupboard, Shenandoah County Virginia. It sold for $962,500. in 2004.

A couple more Spitler painted pieces, although he worked in Virginia in last quarter 18th- 1st quarter 19th century, his stuff has an almost "modern art" quality to it although he used traditional german images, birds, hearts, tulips. The way he put them together is very different & distinctive.

I've found, one needs to be in the room and be able to lay hands on these types of furniture to know exactly what you've got. Some antique pieces are not particularly well done - others are. Also, Iv'e seen 100 + year old interior wood with minimal oxidation due to being left full of textiles for many decades. PS; thanks for those photos James. . . gorgeous !

True, it takes an in person examination by someone who knows what they are looking at to authenticate old furniture, just the way it is. Photographs miss so many things/construction details that are easily seen in person.
