One of my great grandfathers owned a teamster company that carried coal out of the mines in PA. He would have had people like this working for him to keep the wagons rolling and the teams shod and in good shape. Patd
Another thought (apologies if someone else said this)... could it be a joke photo and the seated man is "the boss holding the whip" to keep his employees in line?
I had another thought. What if it is the barn where street trolleys were brought for repair. That would explain the tracks going into the building.
So Im studying the picture and it looks like the tracks may stop at the doors. If you look at the feet of the men behind the center man it looks like they are standing up on on a raised cement floor (was cement floors a thing yet?) So maybe a cart backed up to the door and either dumped or was unloaded from there. It looks as though the doors may slide shut as well.
I was wondering if it’s a backdrop and props from the photographer. Can you post the back of photo? @Figtree3 is it possible this was a studio backdrop?
My phone is dead at the moment, once charged Ill take a picture. Its your everyday tintype back, brown. I dont think its a backdrop though.. They look like they have been working in those clothes and the backdrops Ive seen always have studio flooring. . I think they are a carpenters/woodworkers
Well, anything is possible... but I don't think that it is. Most studios wouldn't have tracks like that, for one thing. And studios probably didn't have enough call for photos of that type to keep such backdrops and props on hand.
