It is Japanese Satsuma ware in the late Kyoto style. It likely dates to the Taisho period or very early Showa (1912-35). The mark on the bottom isn't well formed but is most likely the Japanese character for 'left' - suggesting it was one of a pair originally (as is most Satsuma). The glaze crackle is intentional and the raised white clay work is called moriage.

Thank you very much, must have been bought by her in Japan during the 70s which makes sense as she was there. Any idea at all of its value presumably not much due to damage etc to top?

It's a good size, but the style isn't the most sought after and damage will hold it back. Should be plenty on ebay to gauge prices.
