I have tried some Artist look-up sites (but no joy) I did however find some reference to the fine art dealer and gilder (vintage label on the back) Does anyone perhaps recognize the signature? Probably just a local artist of that time/area. Many thanks

What are names you tried so we don't waste time doing them again?

Really not sure to me it looks like: Mrlingstah,Milingstah or maybe Mrlingstall (which doesn’t make sense) or maybe the ‘g’ is a ‘y’ or a ‘u’ But honestly I don’t know. Please don’t spend too much time on this. I was just curious

Does look like the Pennines. May well be a local artist.

I think the first letter in the surname is a W

Hello Debora, sorry I thought I showed the whole lable. Thanks for the link. I also come across that gazette page when I was researching . The April 1922 date relates to the dissolving of a partnership. Not sure when that firm was started.

I will search with W. But yes,I also think maybe a unknown local artist. So the possibilities are endless

The partnership dissolved in 1922 and the business went from two locations (Blackburn & Burnley) to just one (Blackburn.) As the label on your work carries only one address, it's not illogical to assume that it was produced after the dissolution of the partnership.

How clever of you to read the first letter as a first name initial! And I think you might be right. Here's a period reference I found for him which puts him in Manchester. Location gives sense to a Blackburn framer.

From the papers of the Manchester Literary Club in 1883.

Definitive then. And how satisfying. A charming work to be enjoyed without attribution but... name of artist always adds.

I found a William Artingstall in the 1881 census. He was living in Hyde, Cheshire, close to Manchester. Occupation Painter, Age 45. I think that matches well with the info that Debora found. Possibly the same person.
