It looks like a dried up piece of fungus.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

That's what I was thinking, too. The vanilla musk smell is interesting, though. Does it seem to be a natural smell, @Kingjoker , or added? Or can you tell?

[IMG] I can't tell the size of these irregular pieces? Are they the size of a mushroom, like the chanterelle, say anywhere from 1 to 5" across the top, or so? Am very familiar with chanterelles as we pick them here on our lot and I grew up in Sweden where we went mushroom picking. Incidentally, it's very easy to dry chanterelle for later consumption (soak in cold water overnight to un-dry, mix in in sauces, gravies). However, dried chanterelles are very brittle, crumble easily. If your pieces are hard, petrified, I doubt they're chanterelles, more likely driftwood. The odor may be from storage in a potpourri of dried flowers with a vanilla fragrance. Can you provide a from-to size of these pieces for proportion?
