Vintage chair type, maker and year if possible

  1. Hello everyone, I have one more question for the week about the chair in the pics. I know nothing AT ALL about chairs except you sit in them. This chair is special just to me because it's from my local Freemasons lodge, where my family and I are all members. I used to sit in this when I was a kid there beside my papaw, who is now deceased. I just want to strip it and get it back to as close to original as possible. I'm curious about the type, possible maker and whatever else you can find. Unfortunately someone painted it an ugly grey, so no makers mark. Thanks in advance for any info!!! Also two spindles are metal. 16296304833334526913808074765491.jpg 20210822_060919.jpg

    Any marks, or tags?

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

Looks like an old "captains" style chair, maybe from the '50's (guess ?) ...been reinforced with the metal rods....stripping and staining will only help the chair!!!! SO NICE that you have fond memories from it!!!

With @Aquitaine 100% on this. Would guess that this is oak, so it will look SO much better when stripped of this hideous Navy-style paint. Good on ya!

Barrel back tavern chair. A variation on a windsor chair. Have seen those reinforcing metal rods enough times to think they are original.

  8. Holy cow! Is there anything you don't know? I'm very impressed because every piece I've asked about, you've known exactly what it was!!

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

We'd love to see this one with the paint gone -- Please update this thread if you decide to work on this. :)

  10. I'm currently stripping it and slowly taking it completely apart. I'm having trouble getting the spindles to come out. If anyone has any tips or tricks, please let me know. I've just used stripper so far but I haven't worked on it much. Thanks!!

Looks earlier then the 50's,, and I agree with 'verybrad', seen many with reinforcing rods that seem factory. a cheaper way of making a stronger chair
