@Natasha will be able to tell us all about the manufacturer, who is well known, but I can't read or remember the name.

They are so cute. They remind me of the nesting dolls faces.

As far as I know, Gzhel is the name of a town which is famous for blue and white porcelain. I think there are several manufacturers. Maybe also in other towns?

Found it, Gzhel is the name of a village where a lot of this porcelain was made, and also of the blue and white porcelain style:

I hope @Natasha will be back soon to help with the name of the manufacturer.:)

Yes, this is Gzhel made for export. There are two variants of the mark "handmade" and "handpainted". Both were used between 1986-1990. Sonetimes they do not even use the word "Gzhel", just handmade/handpainted in USSR. I also have their pieces. Besides, I have a duplicate of Girl with Basket. If you are interested, send me an email

can someone explain if the russian lettering does indeed spell Gzhel? I dont recognize the G for example, and "H" doesnt really exist but they sometimes use an angle for H.

    In Russian it is Гжель:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gzhel_(selo),_Moscow_Oblast
Gzhel is a transcription of Гжель for English speakers. The H is added for English speakers to indicate the sound of ж in Russian.
Another possibility when transcribing it could be Gzyel. At the moment I can't think of an English word with the same sound, if I can, I will post it.

wow thanks for all that information.

One more q: that's a "v" at the end of the word, no? why?

    Natasha Well-Known Member

It's not "v", it's written version of Russian letter "л" which corresponds English "l"

is there not a character "b" at the end of the word?

  16. Natasha

It's not "b", it's letter soft sign "ь". English alphabet does not have such a letter. It's similar to the sound of the letter "g" in the word "sing"

Yes but what sound does it make? Or modify?

It softens the last letter, difficult to explain, one has to hear it.
