You got me, have not seen this one before. MmePlantier is probably on the right track with a scene from the Trojan War.

This may have been the idea in the carver's head, though inconsistent with the episode as related in the Iliad. (The body has to be carried off the battlefield & it is other Greeks who do this; Achilles is in his tent.) There is sure to be an original of this, either sculpture or engraved gem. Seems like a challenge for @i need help

Here is one of the former:

There is no agreement as to who is carrying the body in this group. Menelaus, Odysseus & Ajax are all candidates. I'm not the only one who doesn't know what's going on.

Here is one of the latter:

This will take up residence in the back of my mind & someday it may come out again when I stumble across the answer.

Really nice cameo. Where was it found?

Thank you, INH. If anyone can do it, it's you. I'm less versed in the tales of wars & the heroes who conduct them so not very good at recognizing them.

The way the drooping figure is holding his spear is very odd, no? Its position in the scene makes me think a sculpture is the source image.

Great catch. I have learned that cameos that are not pretty the way this one is: Cameo depicting a girl with lilies in her hair fetch a handsome price, why? are interesting only to collectors on the lookout for the unusual. The general public associates cameos with pretty ladies.

If you sell in a venue frequented by cameo collectors, piece should do very well even though not in a setting.
