Hi all. Another one of my birthday finds. Its 3 inches high and wide, not glass, but white kind of stone ? I thought MAYBE rock crystal? I walked by it and at first glance thought melted glass, but I picked it up and when I realized it was some sort of stone I was intrigued. I cant decide if its layers of clouds or waves.I also thought maybe its a brush pot of some sort. There was a black buildup in the hollow, and several hairs. The hollow is from top to bottom, but theres no well. So what do yall think ? Chinese jade brush pot or weird lump of stone ? All input always appreciated. :)

That looks too deliberate to be natural.

There's a lot of bubbles in it,probably glass.

Agree probably glass - but if what look like bubbles aren't really bubbles, could be an agate nodule - I've seen similar.

Im pretty sure its not glass,it just feels like stone. it doesnt warm up when you hold it,the texture is almost velvety (for lack of a better term) .I could of course be wrong.

It looks almost a bit like when sugar is heated up to a certain point and gets that lovely texture and appearance. That doesn't help, I know.

You could do a scratch test - if you can use your "rock" to scratch the bottom of a drinking glass (made of glass of course) then it would be harder than glass and I'd think would most likely be quartz(agate).

It scratches glass. Just to clarify,I was only joking when I called it "Jade Brush Pot" ! Thats more wishful thinking.

Now that I've zoomed in full size - I can see what you're saying about the bubbles. Johnny - definitely appears to be some bubbles in there - in which case I'd say it's glass - and glass can scratch other glass.

It does - like a lump of slag glass

If its slag glass or end of day glass its the smoothest Ive ever felt.Would they go to the trouble to polish or buff the thing? This thing has no sharp edges anywhere.I think what everyone sees as bubbles are this sort of milky white striations. I normally bow to crowd wisdom, but Im telling yall this thing is not glass ! :)
I just tried to scratch the thing with a pen knife and with glass, and I couldnt make a mark . Shouldnt I be able to if it were glass? Im sure yall are right, but Im so confused !

Glass has different hardness depending on type,Quartz is a 7 and glass can be 4.5-7 on the MOHS scale.

It is beautiful, Johnny. It looks like slag glass to me as well. We used to get them with that polished look from one of the factories my father managed. A local artist made collages from them.
I can see both bubbles and milky white striations or swirls. There is a row of three bubbles just right of the brown stain on the centre left hand side.
Sorry, I can't crop the photo to show, I am not on my own computer.

I'm not picking out the bubbles, but do see a material that was molten/liquid when it took on that shape. Another vote for glass. I think it's cool looking too.

That, people, is almost certainly cullet. Not slag.

    Hi Johnnie,
I agree with cullet glass. I used to have several large lumps of vaseline glass from an old glass factory in my garden. At night when you used an UV the white flowers would glow purple and the glass would glow green, it was magical. My lumps weighted between 15 and 20 pounds apiece. Yours is just stunning by it's self.
