Jr. is used occasionally in Spanish-speaking countries but a bit of an affectation. Examples: Julio Iglesias Jr., Carolina Herrera Jr.

In addition the II would not properly be the son of the first, because a son named for his father would be Jr. A II suggests a child named for a grandfather or uncle, where Jr isn't appropriate but something needs to distinguish a separate person.

That said I have known two men who did not want to be called junior so they used II.

In general these designations should be dropped when the elder passes and confusion becomes unlikely. This doesn't apply when one or more is so well known that confusion could survive death, or where the Jr has become so identified as part of the name that it's hard to drop it - think Bill Buckley. They are also frequently continued in genealogical listings. - cheers

There is, though, a truly affected usage in British public schools. Minimus and maximus.

I’ve been in the practice of selling lower value items untested when testing is not convenient. More recently I’m more keen on knowing for sure. It’s come back to annoy me enough a couple times. You can get little crappy travel size chines made amps for like $20 on eBay. I may as well have one just so I can say with confidence they are playable to some degree. Likewise I should just buy one of all the popular watch battery sizes to have around and so on. Hoping to get just a little bit more than that for them but not much more, we shall see. Guitars have been good and fast sellers for me locally.

Great point. One of my Hispanic ex lady friends had lots of trouble when applying to American grad schools due to this.

The reverse problem... Having only one surname and having one's middle name constantly used on official documentation as one's first (and most important) surname.

I don’t have that problem as I was not given a middle name. However, this has its own set of annoyances.
