I have the opportunity to purchase a rare etching by Frank Benson.
It is a 1912 etching called Tame Fish Hawk and it is one of a limited edition of
Seven and the reference is Paff 3. It is framed and in good condition and I have no
Question about its genuineness. I am buying for resale and would like an opinion
Re: what I can realistically expect to sell it for. Any help or comments would be appreciated.

Check completed listings on eBay. Looks to me to be the $300-500 range for framed etchings. Look for prints the same size as yours.

If you don't already know what you can expect from selling it...... don't buy it !

I assume since your asking, that your seller has done their research and this is a negotiation? I did find a 2011 result from Skinner for a Fish Hawk Etching, Pfaff 18, in an edition of 13, that sold for $7750. So I think you are on the right track. I did see that one of the impressions is in the Boston Public Library, that leaves 6 in circulation. I also saw an open edition print floating around Ebay. Make sure to take a good look at the one the Boston Public Library has to make sure the paper is right.

I generally don't make a purchase without knowing more or less what I can expect when I sell but this print and its potential value has captured my imagination.

The print has some documentation so I don't doubt it. However it's lack of auction history gives me pause.

Well I lost the auction for the print. It sold for 1500 with buyers premium.
I take solace in having recognized it was of significant value!

Premiums really get me sometimes, you know they are taking a slice off both ends. Sorry you didn’t win, but you have to stick with a plan and not get carried away.

Yes they get you coming and going. But you're right about not getting carried away. I was tempted to keep going but the other bidder seemed determined to own this print and since my pricing knowledge had limitations I left the field to fight another day.
