I found this painting today at a thrift store. I think it's surreal?
It's signed Schwartz '62 - does anyone know who this Schwartz is?

This is not an example of surrealism either..

 

I'd call that Expressionism.

 

It's a Rag Shop framing store label Debora - a lot newer than 1962!

 

Not Impressionist?

 

So closed in 2007 and been in business 30 years, which is right for label graphics. A hobby shop like Michael's or JoAnn's at the time focusing on fabrics, crafts and framing. Retail presence in New Jersey and Florida.

Although there are still people out there who insist on calling it realism.

 

What about Post Modern Partially Abstracted Impressionistic Semi-Hyper Deconstructed Expressionistic Neo Realism. I think the signature is a good indicator of the skill or seriousness of the artist, looks like they struggled to scratch it out with a ball point pen.

 

That about sums it up.

Surrealism, dream or even nightmare-like, inspired by Sigmund Freud and early psychology:

Expressionism, not dream like, but expressing a strong emotion in colours and shapes. No early psychology involved, just plain old raw emotion. The way those emotions are expressed can be very different, but it always has to do with either colours, shapes/lines, or both:

You might want to look at this Florida Artist Named Carl Schwartz, he did figures in the 1960's and signed his paintings Schwartz.

 

Good suggestion above. He taught at Florida Gulf Coast University for many years and the school holds a number of his works. Perhaps there's someone there you can ask. This librarian, for instance. If she can't help, may be able to direct you on. Figure may be Mercury with winged hat and magic wand. Let's ask @Bronwen what she thinks.
