    I'm with komo, the way the clasp & pin are affixed directly into the material is characteristic of brooches made of an organic material.

    Another vote for bone, and it is beautiful.
    That knotwork is often thought of as Celtic, but it was used by other cultures as well. Given it is a round brooch, it could also be Scandinavian or Latvian, for instance.
