This lovely lady was a thrift store find today. It is a original pastel portrait from the 1920s. it is signed L E or L F. Any info about it or the artist would be very much appreciated. :) 20181128_192124.jpg 20181128_192117.jpg 20181128_192222.jpg 20181128_192403.jpg 20181128_192432.jpg

I'd think a bit of a long shot identifying artist. Have you opened frame to see if marked on back?

I have to say... Neither the frame nor the mat looks to date to that period. May well be 1970s does 1920s.

It's 1920s character, but is it dated 1920s?

She's shamelessly wearing a dead fox - not politically incorrect for the day... :)

If the initials were LS, you might have had an original Lea Stein - this was a popular style in th 70s.

She also made (French) lucite jewelry, but her early serigraph portraits are very collectible.

The market for the lucite jewelry is mostly in Europe, but it turns up in the USA too. The picture looks like it's straight out of the late 70s - Disco era does flapper.

Took it out of the frame... no info on the artist but it is from the 20s...it was reframed. It is artist board and the back looks very old.

Definitely not from the 70s. I took it out of the frame and the back looks like the 20s...very old. 20181128_223233~2.jpg

I'm curious about the paper on the back - the part with printing on it. (Of course, it could have been attached to the back at any time.)

I'm guessing that the words refer to Carter's clothing. I see that Carter's has been around since the 1860's, but I don't know about dating the "elastic waist", "cotton mesh", etc. mentioned on that paper.

    Does anyone know?

I took a look at that but couldn't find the exact ad. Assume "elastic waist" refers to men's product and men's underwear -- according to the internet -- didn't have elastic waists until 1925. A 1925 date or later would be consistent with subject's hair style.

No knowledge here, but I am curious why an ad was pasted to the back on the work. Could it be relevant to the picture?

Can't help with this - but I recall that Carter's kids underwear from the 60's was called Spanky Pants. Bet no business would use that name now.

Think the association had more to do with The Little Rascals, a popular re-run in the 1960s, than corporeal punishment.

Jivvy the research is my favorite

Not so much a brand name as a clothing category (cheerleader gear).

Sometimes I wish I didn't have the compulsion to google. :hilarious:
