I found this antique painting over the weekend and was wondering if anyone might know the subject matter. I am thinking this has some religious meaning, perhaps a story from the bible. Painting is a woman with a single flower laying at her feet. On her left is a tiger in the process of attacking a boar. And on her right there is another tiger coming through a doorway. Painting measures 17 3/4" by 25" and is done on canvas. Come is a gold gilt frame. The corner brackets on the back are stamped PAT. ????? 1885 A.D.S. No signature that I can find on painting. Any opinions or thoughts on this piece are greatly appreciated.

I'm not seeing an attack on a boar on the left. More like 2 big cats wrestling, or even a mother washing a resistant older cub. My first free-association thought was Sarah Bernhardt. Pre-Raphaelite?

Could be tigers but they look more spotted than striped to me. Maybe leopards? Don't know a tale with either though.:(

Added a couple of more pictures, definitely a large cat attacking a boar or matbe a small bear? The color and texture of the fur is completely different along with the snout.

They could be a representation of leopards or lions.

I think its religious as well. My 1st thought was Christians in the lions den.

The left hand critter being bitten (I think) rather looks like a hyena.

Found this info on the frame closures.

Aaron Draper Shattuck, the inventor and patent
holder of the Shattuck Patent Stretcher Key.
Patent # 320300 for a Stretcher Frame was
issued June 16, 1885 to Aaron D. Shattuck
(ADS) of Granby, Connecticut. It superceded
his earlier patent for the same device, issued
    on Feb. 13, 1883.

It was my understanding that the romans would let all different kinds of animals out at once upon the poor christians. That way they could get a twofer, the animals fighting each other AND eating the christians.

I'm getting a more Mistress of Beasts feeling from it. The woman does not seem in any peril.

You are right Bronwen, she does not seem to be in any peril.

Bakersgma, I was wondering if there is any signifigance of the single flower at her feet?

Patent dates only tell you when the patent was approved, not when it was made.
