I've been shopping local thrift stores for months looking for a vintage/antique vanity and found this one for a song yesterday. There is some minor veneer issues, and it needed a good clean, but other than that and some expected finish wear, it is in really great condition with seemingly original hardware AND wooden wheels. I'm guessing this is probably a depression era reproduction and not an original judging by the machined dovetails, but that's as far as I can go with my limited knowledge and google searching.

I checked the back and all of the drawers for some sort of manufacturer's stamp and came up empty. Any help identifying the age/style of this vanity would be much appreciated. IMG_7244.JPG IMG_7245.JPG IMG_7246.JPG IMG_7247.JPG IMG_7248.JPG

Circa 1920. Appears to be walnut. Not really a reproduction of anything. Some elements of William and Mary style but really just post-WWI traditional.

This is a question: is that piece known as a vanity? I tend to think of a vanity as a piece of furniture that allows Milady to sit close enough to the mirror to allow her to dress her hair becomingly. That center section does not allow that.

LOL! It is a vanity...or dressing get table. I've heard it called both. And, actually the open center allows me to press my face right up to the mirror if I want to.

    I seldom want to.

I would prefer a bit more work top, though, so I'm looking into options to add a shelf or drawer. If I add that I'll probably have to paint it.

It is recessed a bit in the center so I think it is a vanity. I am not sure that many others allow one to get that much closer. The configuration with the larger center mirror dropped down like this is a typical Edwardian creation that persisted post-war. It may be an adaptation from English dressers that also had a larger center mirror but didn't drop down quite as far. It seemed to drop out of favor altogether later on.

Dressing table, certainly. And I agree 1920s, when the working and lower middle classes started to get the money to buy proper furniture. I do like someone who uses a useful old thing, rather than buying Ikea tat.

Dressing table conjures up something more like this and a google search tends to confirm......

I never thought vanities all that useful a piece of furniture since they don't store much and you can't really sit under them. This seems to be confirmed by sales. I don't sell vanities well and not for much money when they do sell. I have quit buying them for the most part.

We had those dressing tables in all our bedrooms growing up. I loved the mirrors as you could see the sides of your hair, I wore "spit curls" in the early 60's and I had to make sure they were even. :p
