I bought this nice porcelain elephant vase at a local thrift store Friday - it appears old to me but I really can't say for sure - any thoughts? Is it oriental?
    It's cute and squat (8.5"T x 7.5"W)
The fact that there is no markings on the bottom; is that a good thing or bad? (if I remember correctly imports had to have a Made In... mark after the 1920's or 30's?

I also bought this beautiful 24" tall, hand painted, made in Italy jaguar that is made of terra cotta & - is it porcelain or maybe glazed and painted terra cotta on the top?
I found a few just like mine at crazy prices - including 1 that sold - close to $2,000!?
I got this one for $50 because 1 tooth is broken/missing - does that hurt the value that much or did I hit a home run with this?

    Thanks for any help!

Your elephant vase looks like it could be a base for a candle holder. Google "famille rose elephant" and I think you will like what you see.

Jaguar screams 1960s. I'm trying to remember who made those big figures. Yes, the tooth hurts it, but I'd still think it would be double or more what you gave.

On a side note, do you collect kaleidoscopes?

I don't think either the elephant or the cheetah is old. The elephant was made to look old, bunch of brown scrubbed onto it. The cheetah appears to have been made yesterday, without any time to collect a speck of dust. I'm sure both of these will sell well for you, Journey.

Probably a brown stain to artificially age it.

I've got an Italian terracotta based huge cat, bought by my parents in the 50s. It looks brand new.

I've seen similar. Agreed - not particularly old. The cheetah will find a human to love it; cats sell.

The jaguar (cheetah?) is from the 60s - the elephant I'm not sure either way - but if its a famille rose elephant, do they come in 2 pieces (the elephant base & the piece on top the candle goes in)?
I hope with fingers crossed that it is one but I don't have a good feeling about it being so.

Precisely that. Brown stuff and other 'dirt' on Chinese porcelain means it is pretty recent. I saw the first 'dirt encrusted' items ca 2010, but the trend could have started before then.

My advice: Clean it up and you've got a nice honest piece that will sell. People love elephants.

Is it (can I call it) a famille rose elephant?
