What are these little hooks for?

I remember seeing something like this once, and was told that they were BALE HOOKS - you know? For carrying tied-up bales of hay?

Just a possibility. May, or may not be. I have an actual pair of antique boot-hooks...the shape of the hook doesn't look ideal for that sort of purpose. All the boot-hooks I've ever seen (modern, antique, and even mine - which are antique), are all more 'flat' than this.

I assume not for boots although I agree it’s possible. Could be a blacksmiths personal pair I suppose. Def too small for hay!

 

I worked horse shows for a little while as a young man. That gave me the horribly allergenic experience of working the hay yard. At this large show the stacks were probably 25-30 feet tall. Dangerous work when tossing around very heavy bales. Hay particles trapped under your shirt and pants in 100 degree heat makes things unpleasant to say the least. I preferred driving the tractor around to stalls and delivering the hay. Anyways all to say your idea is good but these would only work as a large dolls hay hooks if that doll was a manual laborer. On the other hand if you wanted to get crazy jacked up really quickly working the hay yard was better than any gym in the world. The guy that did it full time looked like he could pop your head between his fingers without a lot of effort.

 

That makes the most sense of anything I’ve heard actually. What say you KSW? Presumably a horse person? The size is probably right. Although the lifting little municipal lids in streets does sound plausible but I still don’t think it’s probably that.

I have a horse and I'm not thinking I'd use it as a hoof pick. For one thing it's pretty pointy and you don't really want to gouge around the frog. It doesn't look like it would be easy to hold right for using. Maybe in hand it would work....hard to tell.

I'd guess boot hook myself.

That’s what I’m used to seeing as well. Doesn’t mean someone didn’t like this design better at some point though. This may be one that remains unsolved though.
