This is a little pottery jug which I find intriguing. It is simple but beautifully formed. There is no maker's mark, but what looks like "rcf" in pencil underneath. To me it looks like Doulton Lambeth, but the lack of any marks is worrying. Does anyone have any suggestions? It might be just a little studio or tourist piece, but I would like to know who made it and maybe when. The first photo is the closest to the colour. Jug - 1.jpeg Jug - 3.jpeg Jug - 5.jpeg

    Could it be Lambeth ware?

It isn't Doulton Lambeth, but it is 19thC salt glazed stoneware. We had many factories, especially London ones making these wares.

Vinegar, I'd think, missing a cork. Nice little fat thing.

Thank you, that does make sense, the fineness of the work has been put into a piece of tableware, where people could appreciate it every day, not just a little novelty. Of course little vinegar jugs are still made today, but I just didn't notice the connection.

PS to above comment, I must have touched the wrong key and posted the incomplete reply! (Is there an edit button to sort that out?) I was saying that pottery appreciation is somewhat rare amongst my friends and relations, but the internet allows me to reach out to similar-minded folk throughout the world.

Very sweet piece! Yes, those that understand an interest in ceramics can be rare but a treasure to find!

I'm a Doulton Lambeth addict. Even their plumbing wares - humblest things - are wonderfully well made and satisfying to handle. They, and other similar factories, made utilitarian pieces that were well designed and worked.

Yes, there is something about it that really attracts me. It might be the indented dark brown decoration around the middle, something makes me feel that the potter enjoyed making this.
