Featured Red and clear glass vase... what to call. (Thinking not "cut to clear"...or??)

Mostly posting for my own interest because I'm keeping this thrift purchase as a small flower vase. I thought it was such a sweet piece.

Seems like the red is a thin layer, maybe not glass but some kind of coating possibly? Wasn't sure what to call this? (Cut to clear??)

Also curious about age. Thanks for taking a look.

It also may be called cut to clear.

 

I believe that term is only used when there are two actual layers of glass, such as a red layer cased over clear, and then the red glass is cut away to make the design. That is not the case with this piece. It is the "middle class" version, much cheaper to produce.

 

You may be right. This really is not my area, but the vase is lovely.

 

It's very easy to spot when you see scratches in the red finish. Real glass won't do that.

Yes, ruby stained. Flashed is a layer of glass, this is not flashed.

Agree with Marie, this is stained. Flashed is integral and won't wear off.

 

Is this not the same technique as all the ruby stain souvenir goblets and items from the World Fairs? Looks the same to me. I always thought those were considered etched
