Heavy Brass Vintage Wall Hanging

It has all the hallmarks of years of polishing. It is meant to hang on a wall and just has one hole, so I know which way up it went (the opposite way to which I thought, as the scrolls appear to hang down). Its heavy brass, approx 9" x 6” and the scrolled arm projects out about 4”. Any ideas? Thank you!

 

looks like a door pull with a hook to hold the key for a matching lock........

Although, doorknocker comes to mind since the top hole was for the swinging hammer part of the knock and somehow the missing hinged piece would rest in between the forked shape when not being used for knocking. It could have had two pieces (think upper arm/elbow/forearm) with a hinge or link as moving the hammer for knocking. Not sure, because then how was it mounted to the door? Maybe from the inside with a screw that threaded into the center of the hardware.

Is there evidence of machine screw threads inside that center opening on the backside?
