Hi everyone- bought these three stunning porcelain plates today. Appear to be one of one hand painted French items. I don’t really want to break the frames to look at the back of them so was wondering if anyone one here recognizes the style and maker? :)

Lovely plates! I often think of French origin, too, when I see pink on plates like this. Of course, the color pink was not restricted to the French. What I find problematic to French origin is the shape of the blank. The most likely French manufacturer from the aesthetic time period would be Haviland and I don't remember Haviland using that type of pierced edge. Pierced rims are more often associated with German and Bohemian manufacturers. That doesn't mean they are not French decorated but that's just more conjecture at this point. I agree with you that it's not worth breaking the frames to find out for sure. It would be especially demoralizing if, after breaking a frame, to find out the plates are unsigned after all.

Can you not carefully prise off the back of the frames? Usually just a matter of bending back the little metal clips that hold the back panel in place then carefully lifting it out. You should be able to easily replace the back after you've had a look though you may need to replace the tape.

These look later than aesthetic movement to me and the colours seem a bit too bright and varied for that period. (But I'm more a faience gal, so perhaps this is normal for porcelain?) I can certainly see why you think French, but they could be Japanese or another 20th c homage to the French style.

Either way you need to look at them to know what you have ;) good luck
