I saw this ring for sale on eBay earlier... Is this where you bought it from?

It appears to be a base metal with copperplating and goldplating over top of that, all worn down.... Either for intentionally aged appearance or genuinely worn over time through extreme lack of care. It is unlikely to be a genuine piece of pirate jewellery however, as piracy was a hangable offence and pirates would not advertise, nor risk revealing their vocation. For this reason, pirates wouldn't wear something that might give the game away, so to speak.

Does that actually have the word PIRATE written over the skull?

Funnily enough, it does sort of look like that, but from all the high-res images I've seen, the word is incomplete and unclear. Let's see what Adalbert says of the ring in their possession. If it does actually say PIRATE that would effectively eliminate it as being genuine straight out.

It says "Pirate" right on it.
    I think it's a mid-century kids ring.
