Here's a piece I picked up at Ill Will ?. Yep,GW. It's image size is 5 1/4" by 7 1/4" ,it appears to most definitely be a photogravure.Haven't removed it from the frame yet.Framed by a modern shop in Seattle-'artform custom framing',you can see the price sticker on the back.I've got to get a jewelry quality loupe for these types of finds.Caption-'APACHE GAUN' and 'From Copyright Photograph 1900 by E.S. Curtis'. I think it's good.we'll see. PS-Excuse the glare (should've removed it from the bathroom wall before I photoed).
Gaun/Gaan/Gan/Crown Dance are all names for an Apache ceremonial dance. Here is more on the background: https://parentseyes.arizona.edu/node/886 All I can say is that the original is indeed by Curtis. The rest I leave to the photo experts.
Here's an original Curtis photograph: https://www.santafeartauction.com/auction-lot/edward-curtis-apache-guan-1906_7594518815 I think that yours, being photogravure, will be an early reproduction.
Thanks Any J-Interesting. Morestuff- Yep,early Photgravure.Curtis was the Native American Norman Rockwell (some of his images also are great pieces of photographic art). His big$ stuff seem to be his large 'gold tones',folios, and the one you just showed me-seems to be a decent sized cabinet card (?). I'm surprised how much people are asking for his smaller photogravures (doesn't mean they're selling though). Mostly the novelty of this discovery was finding anything at all at Goodwill-if I find a usable claw hammer in that place now I'm thrilled !
