As you can see, the antiques dealer that went out of business and sold all their wares at a local auction had some ambitious price tags for their items. Perhaps that's why they were not successful?

Anyway, they claim this large wash bowl was made by Wedgwood. There are NO markings. I am thinking, for whatever cynical reason, it is more like a WedgeNOT.

Either way, it's a wonderful item. I do have the matching pitcher that goes with it. Both were snagged for $5.00 each at above mentioned auction.

Word of advice: don't sell your glassware, porcelains and antique silver items at a local farm auction that usually sells tools, guns, furniture and farm equipment.

    Thanks for any info!

Categorically not Wedgwood. Might be Brownfield, or there's another maker did classicist transfer stuff, whose name escapes me.

I do like it when the transfer is slightly wonky. A Real Person did that.

The drawings resemble the work of John Flaxman (see his illustrations for the Iliad & the Odyssey). I can understand how someone might be inclined to attribute it to Wedgwood. Even if it's Wedgwoodn't, I like it.

Could you show the pitcher? Sometimes the shape or the handle is distinctive.

When you do show the pitcher, be sure to click on "FULL IMAGE" after loading your photos. Then the photos appear in the text and not as thumb nails. A bit easier to see. :) Thanks!

Also, pretty nice looking piece, even if not Wedgwood. $5 is a great price!

Oops, didn't notice the OP was Vitry --- I thought a new poster. Probably just a typo not clicking Full Image.

Definitely post the photos of the pitcher, too Vitry!

Somebody has collated a nice little factfile here on Old Greek patterns from F & R Pratt and their history.

I did find this in Flaxman's works. For whatever reason your maker decided the 'Two Graces' was enough.

I know of Samuel Alcock and Adams also who made pratt ware with Greek figures.

But my closest guess for this piece so far would be Furnivals. They were known to have made wash sets not dissimilar to this with the beige coloured figures. I can't match up any of the transfer patterns to any furnival pieces yet but it is uncannily close for now.

    So I'll keep trying!

Think that would be the 3 Graces who are doing the vestments. The group flying in with the jewellery might be Hours, whose number is uncertain & who seem to serve in all sorts of handmaid roles.

    Good job on finding Pandora.

That would make more sense for them to be the hours not graces

Tracked down the second illustration too! Unfortunately it only makes up the frontispiece, The British Museum went with it being a seated muse in the centre and Hesiod and Perses flanking with lyres.

Think it is more likely to be Homer; look at the eyes. And he's much better known to the general public. But I'm not a classicist, WDIK?

is there a reason why the standing nude has beed covered, and the treatment of the women's elegant facial features has been messed with to the point that the gal on the right looks like one of Rayo's ducks,,,?
